My story "How to Make Friends in Seventh Grade" is up today at Strange Horizons. This is a story I've wanted to tell for a long time now -- and didn't write until a year ago. It's quite a personal piece because it's autobiographical (except for the fantastic elements: the aliens, the spaceship, &c). In my life, the "Tyler" actually died, but in the story, I wanted to give him the ending he deserved.
Anyway, enough ranting and enough spoilers. You can read it online here.

hi,
ReplyDeleteJust read your story, its Beautiful...simply Beautiful!
Hi there
ReplyDeleteI also just read "How to Make Friends in Seventh Grade" and I'm too impatient to wait for my Strange Horizons forum account to be activated, so I followed you here instead.
What a bitter-sweet piece! I like how you balanced the sweet innocence of youth with the harsh difficulties of growing up. I won't be forgetting your story in a long time - particularly the last couple of paragraphs - but reading your post here has given it even more weight and impact. Thank you for sharing. :)

I just finished reading your story. Very impressive and haunting. Well done and keep it up.
ReplyDeleteOn an almost angry, slightly desperate whim, I scoured the net for a decent place to submit a story. Luckily, I found Strange Horizons. But even luckier, I read "How to Make Friends in Seventh Grade". Even if I can't muster enough courage to submit a story, I'm very glad to have run into yours. Thank you so much.
